What You Should Know About an Independent Medical Examination

The insurance company chooses the doctor, sets the appointment, and uses the report to decide whether to approve or deny your benefits. This doctor does not treat you. Their job is to evaluate your condition—often in ways that help the insurance company, not you.

  • Remember that the exam begins the moment you arrive—even walking from the parking lot can be observed and reported.

The goal of the IME doctor is to look for inconsistencies or signs that your injury is not as serious as claimed. Be cautious and prepared.
