A Career Helping Others, No Matter What the Cost
Kenneth has spent his career helping others. Working in behavioral health, he’s dedicated more than two decades to supporting children and adults with mental health challenges, emotional learning disabilities, and autism. He’s always believed that his work is a calling — a way to give back and make a difference.
“I’ve always had a knack for breaking down barriers,” Kenneth said. “Sometimes all it takes is a conversation and an open heart to spark goodness in someone.”
Working in mental health is physically demanding as well. Kenneth was working in a psychiatric hospital on a co-ed unit, helping a coworker with a physically aggressive patient when the patient quickly turned violent, and aggression turned to assault.
Despite being hurt and bleeding, Kenneth’s instinct to care for others took over. “Even after being hit, I was still trying to help this patient,” he said. “He didn’t want anyone else to touch him but me. He trusted me.”
Once the situation was under control, Kenneth finally got medical attention and filed his report. But what followed was even harder than the injury itself.
“When I was taken out of work, my first thought was, how am I going to take care of my family? My four daughters? My mom?” he said. “I thought my employer would help me, but they didn’t. Not even a get-well card.”
That’s when his longtime friend and a former client of ours, Terry Kemp, stepped in.
“Terry told me, ‘Man, if they’re not going to take care of you, call Donahoe Kearney. They’ll fight for you.’ He’d been through it before and said you all handled everything. He even joked, ‘Take me out to dinner if I’m right!’”
“When I spoke to your office, I immediately felt relief. It was like I could finally breathe again. From that moment, I walked with my head high. I had confidence knowing I had a team behind me ready to go to war for me.”
Throughout his case, Kenneth stayed positive and focused, and in the end, his persistence paid off. “You all went to battle and we won the war,” he said. “That feeling — knowing I had people who cared and fought for me — that’s what made me emotional in my video testimonial. For once, I was tongue-tied from joy.”
Today, Kenneth is back working in the mental health field, still helping others every day. He’s also planning to continue his education so he can keep growing in his career and give back even more.
“I want to help people who feel unheard or overlooked,” he said. “That’s what drives me. Your law firm stands out because you fight for people who don’t have a voice. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. That’s how I feel about helping others, and that’s how Donahoe Kearney fights for people — with passion.”
Kenneth’s workers’ compensation journey shows the power of staying positive, keeping faith, and leaning on family. After a serious work injury, he never gave up. With our help, he received the benefits and medical care he needed — and today, he’s grateful, blessed, and overjoyed with the outcome.
